What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown, or cap, is designed to fit over an existing tooth for cosmetic and oral health purposes. Dental crowns can improve the appearance of your teeth while restoring function, providing protection and stabilizing the bone structure.

What are Dental Crowns for?

There are several reasons your dentist might recommend a dental crown, including:

  • Covering a discolored or damaged tooth
  • Creating a more natural bite
  • Assistance for holding a dental bridge in place
  • Restoring broken or worn teeth
  • Protection for a weak tooth, preventing it from breaking
  • To provide support where a large filling makes up most of the tooth structure
  • For rebuilding a tooth after a root canal

What is the procedure for getting a Dental Crown?

Dr. Fornetti uses a 2-step process to place your dental crown. In the first visit, we will take an impression of the tooth to make the custom crown. The tooth is prepared and shaped with the use of small fillings and/or removal of a bit of the structure to ensure the crown will hold and fit.  A temporary crown will be placed with a temporary cement to hold it while awaiting your permanent custom cap.

Take caution to avoid sticky foods like gum and caramel with a temporary crown.

The mold made from your dental impression on your first visit will be used to create a custom crown specifically designed to fit your tooth. When it’s ready, you will return for a second appointment, during which your permanent crown will be checked for fit and secured with a light-sensitive resin and a curing light.

With dental crowns from Norway Dental, the function of your teeth will be restored and you will be ready to show off your beautiful smile with confidence!
